Safari: What You Need to Prepare Before You Go

A Safari holiday is a once in a lifetime experience

that you should definitely try and do at least once in your life. In the past, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a safari in Corbett National Park — and it was truly incredible if a little wet. Planning your own safari holiday? Here are followsummer’s top tips for what you need to prepare. And don’t forget about travel insurance! Here are followsummer’s recommendations to keep your safari covered:

Deciding Where to Go

Before you go jetting off on your safari holiday, you have one very important decision to make. Where are you going to go? India is a popular destination for a safari trip, and where I have been personally, but there are plenty of other places to consider.

The most popular safari destination in the world is Africa, which plays host to The Big Five animals. There are various countries in Africa that are perfect for safari holidays, including South Africa, Namibia, and Tanzania. Plus, there are so many different ways of experiencing a South Africa Safarifrom a guided tour to a self-driving tour or even a hot air balloon ride!

Other popular destinations for a safari holiday include Australia and Sri Lanka. Do your research and take your pick!

Planning Your Experience

I’ve briefly touched on the different ways you can experience a safari holiday, so let’s go into those in more detail. Do you want a relaxing break where everything is taken care of for you? Opt for some kind of luxury lodge and your own tour guide, in that case. Want to experience nature in its truest form? Go for a rustic tent and a group tour. Along with the safari aspect of your holiday, is there anything else you want to be able to see or do?

Make a note of any other experiences you’d like to pack into your adventure. From beaches through to mountain climbs, your safari holiday doesn’t need to be just about the safari.

Packing Your Bags

So, you know where you’re going and what you’re going to do when you get there. Next up, it’s time to start packing your bags. Okay, it might be a bit too soon to start packing right away, but you can always prepare. A packing list will help ensure you don’t forget anything or overpack. Most safari holidays are going to be hot, hot, hot, so you’ll want to bring a lot of lightweight clothing. Sunscreen is also a must on your list, as the last thing you want to do is burn. Don’t forget a hat to keep away the sunstroke too! Depending on where you’re going, you may need to take certain forms of medication — such as malaria tablets for certain parts of Africa.

Double check with a health professional what you need to take, then make sure you’ve packed that in, too.

These are the main things you’ll need to do in order to prepare for a safari holiday, but there are bound to be a few things I have missed off the list. Have you ever been on a safari holiday? Have I missed anything you think needs adding? Let me know in the comments below.

You might want to take information about the animals and especially the birds you might see – in an e-book format might be best.
